2013 Carlton County Fair Demolition Derby
80’s and Newer Rules
1) Full size stock passenger cars and wagons only, no commercial vehicles (hearses or limos, etc.).
2) A Snell approved helmet or equivalent and eye protection is required.
3) All cars must have seat belts. At a minimum, lap belt, but 5 point harness is recommended.
4) All cars must have working brakes.
5) Snow or bar tires on drive wheels are not allowed. There is no ply rule, air only.
6) All cars must be completely stripped of all windows, mirrors, chrome, plastic, fiberglass, etc. No trailer hitches and trunks must be empty.
7) Factory gas tanks must be removed. Fuel tank must be inside of car, behind driver’s seat, fastened down securely with steel strap and bolts (maximum ¾ inch) through body tin only. No rubber straps, chain, plumbers strap or screws allowed. Steel boat tanks and fuel cells only, plastic tanks must be secured in metal box no more than 2 inches (in any direction) larger than tank and all tanks should have a 5 gallon max. Electric fuel pump cars will run an inline pump or have pump mounted in tank and not leak.
8) Batteries must be inside of car, no more than 2 automotive or one industrial multi cell battery allowed. Batteries must be encased in a steel box no larger than 2 inches (in any direction) of the type of battery used. Battery box must be welded or bolted (maximum ¾ inch) to body tin only.
9) 1 dash bar is allowed, kickers are not allowed, not to exceed 6 inches in diameter and may have a 6x6 inch plate on either end, welded to body tin only. Any other bars forward or backward are not allowed.
10) 1 door bar with two kickers are allowed, in the shape of an X, not to exceed 6 inches in diameter and may have a 6x6 inch plate on either end, welded to body tin only. Any other bars forward or backward are not allowed.
11) Driver’s door should be painted white for your safety. Drivers half of windshield and driver’s door window must have steel mesh, strapping, or expanded steel covering them. Driver’s door can be reinforced, but not more than 6 inches beyond any seam.
12) All cars must have a roof sign (18in.x18in. minimum) with color contrasting numbers (example: white on black).
13) All hoods, trunks, and tail gates must be open for inspection or a minimum 12 inch diameter hole cut in them. Holes for exhaust stacks will satisfy hood hole requirement. 4 bolts or chains per hood and trunk to body tin only. Maximum size ¾ inch bolts. Doors and tail gates will be chained only, with a maximum of 4 spots per door. Absolutely no welding or wedging, trunks may be tucked and hoods bent over radiator core support.
14) Engine and drive train must remain in stock location. Motor mounts can be welded or chained. 2 additional motor mounts can be added but in front of carburetor and behind pulleys with no more than 4 inches weld on frame on either side. Exhaust stacks are allowed. After market engine or transmission protectors are not allowed. Slider drive shafts are not allowed. Engine, transmission, and rear ends can be of any passenger car make and model.
15) Radiator must remain in stock location. Radi barrels are allowed, in stock radiator location, and may be welded to radiator saddle tin only.
16) Transmission coolers must be welded or bolted (maximum ¾ inch) to body tin only and covered. Floor shifters are allowed.
17) Suspension may be solid. A-arms may be bolted or welded (2 spots), shocks may be welded, clamped, or replaced. Leaf spring cars are to have no more than 7 leafs on either side. Non-leaf cars may weld a piece of steel across rear hump, no larger than 2x4 inches in diameter and may be placed as such to facilitate solid rear suspension. Rear bumper must not be higher than the front for any car.
18) Bumpers may be from any make or model of passenger car. If a stock 1-sided bumper is used, the back side may be enclosed with ¼ inch maximum thickness flat steel only. Stuffing is not allowed. Sharp ends are not allowed. Bumpers may be welded on. Bumper shocks may be removed. If bumper shocks are removed, bumper is to be welded to frame. A maximum of 4 inches of frame, behind bumper, may be used to weld bumper on.
19) Body mounts can be removed or replaced. A maximum of ¾ inch bolt and 4 inch washer may be used. 4 additional bolts may be added to the passenger compartment, to body tin only.
20) Pre-ran cars may have up to 2 pucker patched areas per frame rail. Maximum of 2 inches beyond affected area and not thicker than ¼ inch material.
21) These cars will remain stock. Any other welding, frame bolts, or roll cages are not allowed.
22) Entry fees will be paid prior to inspection.
23) If a car has material that is not allowed, you may remove it or go home. You will forfeit any entry fee paid. A driver vote will not be allowed. These are the rules, obey them.
24) The top four cars may be inspected following the derby. Anything found that is not allowed at that time will forfeit winnings. Placing will be adjusted accordingly at that point.
25) The last hit on an eligible car wins. In the case of a head-on hit between the last two cars, the last one running wins. All cars will have 1 minute to make an eligible hit. Sandbagging is not allowed.

2012 Compact Demo Derby Rules
1) Any foreign or domestic passenger type car, front or rear wheel drive up to 105.5”, 4 or 6 cyl only (NO V8s).
2) If it’s not stated you can do in the rules DO NOT DO IT. ( NO GRAY AREA BUILDING)..or ask first. Don’t assume its ok….call first!
3) Motor, tranny of choice (crossbreeding) is allowed. Motor and tranny may be chained down, you may weld mounts and or use 1 2” wide x ¼ thick strap mounted to anywhere on engine and welded flat to the top of frame directly in line with front tires only. Do not use as means of frame reinforcement. If we feel it is too much or adds strength to frame you will cut it.
4) All hoods must be able to be opened for inspection at judges request.
5) Transmission coolers, welded rear ends, headers all allowed. If headers not used must have a minimum of 12” by 12” hole cut in hood over carb area.
6) Driver’s door may be welded solid and/or steel door bar may be used with steel not to extend more than 1” from original body or 4” past either end of door.
7) Doors must be either welded or chained shut. Chain must be min 5/16” single loop. If welded, a max pattern of 5” weld on 5” off no weld may be used. Plates no larger than 4”x4”
8) The hood may be secured in 6 places max with any of the following combinations:
A) Single loop 5/16” chain minimum
B) maximum size of ¾” threaded rod with 4”x4” max washers – if using rod, up to 2 rods may be welded TO, but may not go THRU frame. 4 inch maximum weld allowed on frame for each rod. Not 5, not 4.5.…. 3 INCHES PER ROD. This will be measured and enforced closely..remaining rod used must connect TIN TO TIN ONLY!
C) 3” angle, 4” long welded to hood and vehicle and bolted together.
9) The trunk lid may be secured up to 6 places by any combination of the following:
A) Single loop 5/16” chain
B) ¾” threaded rod with 4”x4” max washers – if rod used, up to 2 rods may be welded to or extend thru frame. This is for TRUNK ONLY. Rest must be tin to tin.
C) 3” angle, 4” long welded to hood and vehicle and bolted together.
10) A front side to side dash bar, behind the seat side to side bar, driver side and passenger side bar connecting front and back bar allowed – 4” max diameter thick walled with max of 6”x6”plates on ends. These bars are for safety, not reinforcement and judges will use discretion so don’t over do it. No vertical bars of any kind connected to cross bars. In other words no “kickers” down to the floor.
11) Metal fuel tank 6 gallon max. Boat style or approved fuel cell. Absolutely no plastic tanks. Must be located behind driver in rear seating area either in center or directly behind drivers seat, you must have some sort of cover over fuel tank…floor mat, inner tube, etc… Tank must be securely fastened
12) Sub-frames may be bolted up with ¾” max bolts in two places per frame rail. – One per side in front and one per side in back, no larger than 4”x4” washers may be used on bolts. Absolutely NO connection of front and rear frames by any means. No full framing
13) Up to 2 standard automotive batteries are allowed. Must be securely fastened inside metal box of some sort inside cab of car in front seat area. No bungee cords or plumber strap. Must use chain, rod, plate, etc….to secure. Must be covered in some way.
14) Radiators must be in stock position. You may choose to have no cooling system at all. Radi-Barrels are allowed. Not to extend more than 3 inches above core support. May be welded to core support on top. Thin strap may be used. May be welded on sides to body tin only. No welding of any kind with the purpose of reinforcement. ABSOLUTELY NO WELDING OF BARRELL TO THE FRAME IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM. Don’t go overboard welding these in. If determined by officials to be excessive or reinforcing you will be made to cut.
15) May put 2 straps across rear tail light lens holes connecting trunk to bumper, but must leave inspection holes to view inside of trunk. Maximum 3” wide, 1/8” thick flat iron and cannot go more than 1” past either side of hole.
16) Suspension may be welded. A arms may be welded, 1 strap up to 2” by 2” may be used on each side. Front bumper height 20” max from ground to bottom of bumper.
17) Floor plates allowed only if original floor is rusted out; we will look at bottom side to verify. 1/8” thick max, must be flush to floor not raised to cover cheating. Floor plates cannot create full frame. No other plating allowed on/in car.
18) Any automotive bumper allowed – may be welded on stock mounts only. Bumper may be welded to shock, and shock welded to frame. Bumper shocks may be relocated or collapsed. No added metal or reinforcement. No home made bumpers, such as square tubing or stuffed bumpers. If no bumper, must remove mounting prongs.
19) Any size/ply tire may be used. Drive wheels you may use all season radials or snow tires only. No other kinds of tires may be used such as forklift tires, etc…. Non drive wheels you may use what you want. Double walling, doubling, foaming, water, etc may be done if you choose to.,
20) May weld top seam of frame from firewall forward. Use welder only no added material. ¾ of an inch maximum bead width.
21) Frame repairs- If frame is rusted you may fix it with ¼” plate 1 inch past the rust hole (DO NOT CUT THE RUST SPOT OUT). You may weld a plate 1” past a bend. All plates must be welded to the frame and CANNOT be used as or act like a a gusset. You may fix body with sheet metal 2 inch past rust. Maximum of two plates, each no longer than 6” long max, allowed per frame rail.
2013 Midsize Chain Stock
1.This class is very stock - intended for the beginner or someone who wants to build a vehicle in a day or two. NO WELDING PERIOD UNLESS STATED BELOW!!!!
2.WHEEL BASE: Front wheel drive cars only….no minimum wheelbase, and up to 108“ maximum. NO MODIFICATIONS TO MEET WHEEL BASE REQUIREMENTS. If its even .1 of an inch over 108” DON’T BRING IT. WE WILL BE MEASURING AND YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN IT IF ITS OVER. NO EXCEPTIONS!
3.Vehicles must be left completely factory stock, except as noted below.
4.Gas tank must be placed in back seat area, NO PLASTIC GAS TANKS.
5.Ignition may be hotwired and switches used.
6.All computers and fuse boxes must remain in stock “area”. In other words, can be moved from stock POSITION but must remain in stock AREA they are located….
7.Hood must have a 12”x12” minimum hole to easily extinguish engine fires and secured with max of 2 chains. May not go thru or wrap around frame in any way.
8.Doors must be chained shut in a max of TWO places per door. Chains cannot go around the frame.
9.Hood, trunk, and tailgate must be chained shut in TWO places max.
10.Battery must be relocated inside of vehicle, secured with metal strap or chain SECURED TO BODY TIN ONLY and covered ONE battery max.
11.Factory original drive train must be used. Exhaust headers (stacks) through the hood are allowed. No interbreeding of motor or trannys.
12.Tires must be all season tires. NO BAR/SNOW TIRES ON DRIVE WHEELS. M&S marked tires ok.
13. Radiators must be stock and in stock location. NO RADI BARRELS
14. All bumpers and bumper brackets must be stock for that make and model of car. No welding on bumpers in any way. Bumper brackets must remain connected to frame as it came from factory. No welding shocks to frame.
15. One side to side bar may be run behind driver seat. Max of 6 x 6 plate may be used on ends and may weld or bolt to body.
16. NO PREBENDING OR NOTCHING OF FRAME IN ANY WAY
17. No “protectors” OF ANY KIND. Examples: radiator, starter, distributor protectors, etc…
18.NO GRAY AREA BUILDING. IF IT DOESN’T SAY YOU CAN DO IT, DON’T DO IT OR CALL FIRST.
