The 4-H program uses a wide variety of educational experiences to focus on the development of youth and adults. General project exhibits, with the exception of animals, are on display in this building. Evaluation and assessment of these projects, is a pre-fair event, which also involves our youth in the determining the "best of the best". All evaluation and ribbon placing considers a 50/50 award. Fifty percent of the award is based on the interview of the project member. The other half of the ribbon placing is based on the final project exhibit itself. Some highlights of the 4-H exhibits are a Cat Show, Pet Show, Fashion Revue Style Show, and a Parade. Throughout the fair, activities will be setup for young and old to "Learn by Doing". What is 4-H and what is it doing at the county fair? Visitors to the Carlton County Fair 4-H building have an opportunity to see all the creations of “showmanship” by 4-H youth that are the culmination to a year of “learning by doing.” 4-H is built around the “experiential learning model” in which the member first experiences an activity, then reflects on what happened in the experience, and finally applies what was learned to other activities and experiences. 4-H exhibits are “conference judged.” This means the judge and 4-H’er have a chance to visit together about the exhibit. The member identifies the positive aspects of their project -- the steps taken to complete that exhibit, what they learned along the way, and ways they can improve or future goals they have pertaining to that project. The judge may challenge them to identify those things that were troublesome and to think of what they could to to make it better.
The ribbon award is based 50% on the knowledge the member shared regarding the total project and 50% on the actual finished product. The following criteria helps the judge and the member determine the award:
